What is an Article in Press?

What is an Article in Press?

Articles in Press: These files have undergone enhancements after acceptance but are not yet the version of record (VOR). This version is provided to give early access to findings and may be subject to further editing, as errors affecting the content may be discovered during the final production process. All legal disclaimers relating to the journal apply.

How is the Article in Press different to the VoR?

The Article in Press version is unedited and may contain errors that will be corrected during the author proofing stages of production for the VoR version.

Article in press versions will undergo additional copyediting, typesetting and review, and will not have the full functionality of the version of record. For example, supplementary files may still need to be added, links to references may not resolve yet, etc. The text could still change before final publication.

How do I cite the Article in Press?

Once the final article is assigned to a specific volume and issue of the journal, the “article in press” version will be replaced with the completed, published version. It will then appear within the corresponding volume and issue. The original online publication date—the date the article first became available and recorded as ‘published date’ —will remain unchanged.

Please note that although articles in press do not yet contain full bibliographic details, they may still be cited. Use the first online publication year and DOI when referencing them, and include the information on author(s), article title, publication year, and DOI in your citation.

How does indexing work with an Article in Press?

The Article in Press will only be indexed in Pubmed/ MEDLINE and will not be indexed in other indexing services.

Can corrections/ amendments be made to the Article in Press?

While you cannot make amendments or corrections to the Article in Press, the official version of your manuscript will be going through the proofing process and can be amended ahead of publication.

Can I share the Article in Press version to repositories and scholarly sharing networks?

The Article in Press is made available under the same terms as the published Version of Record. This means that for OA articles, authors can choose to share the Article in Press version on to other locations permitted by the terms of the CC licence.

For authors who have chosen CC BY this includes any location; for authors who have opted for the CC BY-NC-ND licence this includes all non-commercial locations, such as institutional and funder repositories. However, since the Article in Press will be shortly replaced by the published version of record, we would recommend that authors share links to the Article in Press version and then post the final version of record to their chosen repository once available.

Where authors have opted for the subscription publication route, they can share their accepted manuscript (AM) after the relevant embargo period has elapsed. Self-archiving of the Version of Record or Article in Press is not permitted for subscription articles.

Is it OK to have a pre-print and an Article in Press online?

The Article in Press will be online in the same capacity as the version of record (which will replace it once ready) and will therefore have the same licensing. There would be no issues with the Article in Press being present online at the same time as a pre-print.

When will my Article in Press be online?

Please allow 1-2 weeks after completing your production proof & licensing agreement for your Article in Press to go online.

How will I know when the full version of my paper is published?

You will be notified by email upon publication of your version of record.

Can I opt-out of this service?

Articles in press are in place for Fully OA journals as an author benefit to accelerate the dissemination of research and is embedded in the journal workflow. Authors will not be able to opt out for individual articles.

What do I need to do if my manuscript has scheduling needs? I.e. for press release, ARPD, embargo, or funding alignment.

You will need to inform your editor as far in advance as possible if your manuscript requires a press release or specific publication date for any other reason. Once the Article in Press is published, we will not be able to schedule publications.

What happens for manuscripts with co-publications?

Please ensure these are handled in the same way as manuscripts with scheduling requirements (above).
