We are not displaying the Articles Cited and Articles Published metrics that are discussed below until summer 2023.
In Journal performance you can see aggregated usage, citations, and publications. You can use the metrics to quickly understand some aspects of the value that your patrons get from Springer Nature’s journal articles. On the Journal denials page, we list the journals that your patrons were denied access to in the past 24 months.

Reporting period
We report based on calendar years.
The aggregates are updated on the 3rd–10th day of each month.
The aggregates for the current year include activity up until the last day of the previous month.
Data sources
Articles investigated and Articles viewed are based on COUNTER 5 data. The COUNTER 5 data can be downloaded from the Librarian Portal.
Articles cited and Articles published are based on data from Dimensions. The Dimensions data can be accessed with a Dimensions subscription.
The Articles investigated metric
“Articles investigated” is based on COUNTER 5 Title Report (TR) usage data, specifically the Total Item Investigations metric type.
The aggregate is for all journals on SpringerLink, nature.com and BMC.
The aggregate is for all reading platforms, including ResearchGate.
The aggregate is for paywalled content (not Open Access). Paywalled content is content you have licensed, plus non-OA content that we make available free-to-read. This definition is the same as the “Controlled” access type in COUNTER 5.
Investigation counts are available from June 2019.
The Articles viewed metric
“Articles viewed” is based on COUNTER 5 Title Report (TR) usage data, specifically the Total_Item_Requests metric type.
The aggregate is for all journals on SpringerLink, nature.com and BMC.

The Articles cited metric
“Articles cited” is based on Publication data from Dimensions.
We include all published articles that Dimensions attribute to your institution.
“Articles cited” is based on your holdings. So the counts only include articles that were published in journals that you license.
Due to us missing some data, not all your licensed journals might be included in the calculation.
At the same time we do not calculate citations based on the specific copyright years you license. So unlicensed articles can be included in the citation counts.
The Articles published metric
“Articles published” is based on Publication data from Dimensions.
We include all published articles that Dimensions attribute to your institution.
All articles are included, no matter the funding model. This means that the aggregates include articles paid with APCs form individuals, Transformative Agreements, Fully open access agreements, or other funding sources, as well as articles that were published behind the paywall.
“Articles published” is based on your holdings. So the count only include articles that were published in journals that you license.
Due to us missing some data, not all your licensed journals might be included in the calculation.
At the same time we do not calculate published articles based on the specific copyright years you license. So articles that were published in unlicensed issues of the journals can be included in the publishing counts.
